Outdoor Cushion Covers: A Guide to Fabric, Fit and Care

Outdoor sofa with pale cushion covers on a sheltered garden terrace

Outdoor cushion covers need to fit the cushion, suit the intended exposure and work with the furniture’s care routine. Fabric colour is one decision; the cover’s shape, seams, fastening and relationship to the filling are equally useful details to confirm.

For a hotel or restaurant project, keep the cover specification with the complete upholstery and furniture order. This gives the design and operations teams the same reference when reviewing samples or discussing later replacements.

Confirm what the cover is intended to fit

Start with the finished cushion dimensions and shape. Identify whether it is a seat pad, back cushion or occasional cushion, and include any shaped corners, piping, straps or other construction details.

If an existing cushion is used as a reference, record its condition. A worn or compressed pad may not represent the dimensions intended for a new set.

Review the cover on the actual filling

A loose fabric casing does not show how it will sit once fitted. Ask to review the proposed cover with the specified filling, including the appearance of seams and corners and the fit around the closure.

For upholstered furniture, assess that cushion on the actual frame. Confirm that the pad stays in position and that ties or fastenings do not interfere with normal use.

Specify the exact fabric reference

Request the fabric supplier, colour reference and technical information for the intended application. Keep a labelled physical swatch with the approval rather than relying only on a screen image.

Include exposure in the brief. Covers for sheltered seating and regularly exposed furniture need to be discussed with the rest of the cushion construction.

Sunbrella’s water-performance guidance is one example of why a fabric needs to be identified precisely: its range includes different levels of water performance. The selected fabric still has to be made into a finished cushion.

Check seams, closures and access

Review the zip or other opening, its position and how the filling is fitted. Ask whether the casing is designed to be removed by the user and what handling the supplier permits.

A zip alone does not establish that the cover is suitable for machine washing. Sunbrella’s upholstery instructions advise checking with the furniture manufacturer before removing a casing because cushion construction varies.

Agree the approved cleaning method

Keep the care instructions for the selected fabric and complete cushion together. Confirm permitted products, washing methods where applicable, rinsing and drying requirements. Cleaning chemicals must also be compatible with surrounding materials.

Keep seams and contact areas clean

Clean outdoor cushions arranged on open storage shelves

Include the less visible parts of the cover in routine checks: seams, the underside and areas resting against the frame. Leaves and food debris can gather there during normal use.

Sunbrella explains that mildew can grow on dirt, pollen and organic matter on fabric. Regular attention to those deposits remains relevant even when a textile is described as mildew-resistant.

Our guide to cleaning cushions without removable covers addresses the handling questions when the casing stays on the pad.

Plan drying, storage and later replacement

Follow the supplier’s instructions for drying the complete cushion. Check the underside as well as the visible surface and avoid packing cushions away while damp.

For project quantities, confirm the storage capacity using actual cushion dimensions. Record what can be ordered separately, its reference and any quoted availability.

Keep fabric references and sample records for later enquiries. A photograph of the original seating is useful context, but it cannot replace the cover and cushion specification.

Include the covers in your furniture brief

When selecting outdoor sofas or outdoor chairs, review the frame, filling and outdoor cushion covers as one setting.

Send Vectraout your project requirements, reference images and approximate furniture quantities. Include the desired fabric direction, exposure and cleaning routine so these details can be discussed during the specification and quotation process.
