Custom outdoor cushions should be specified with the furniture they will sit on. A useful brief identifies the seat dimensions, cushion shape, filling, fabric and conditions of use, so the finished setting can be assessed as a whole.
For hotels, restaurants and resorts, the specification also needs to fit the operating routine. Staff may need to lift, dry, clean or store the cushions every day. Those requirements are worth resolving before a project quantity is approved.
Start with the furniture dimensions
Provide a dimensioned furniture drawing or measurements of the actual frame. A description such as three-seat sofa does not establish the width, depth or shape of its seat cushions.
Record the available seating area, obstructions, corner shapes and the relationship between seat pads and back cushions. Identify whether the design needs separate cushions or a continuous pad. If an existing cushion is used as a reference, note whether it has become compressed or distorted.
Show the details that affect fit
Photograph the furniture from the front, side and above. Include any fixing points, straps or shaped sections. Ask the supplier to confirm which dimensions are finished cushion measurements and what tolerances apply.
For a new collection, review the cushion on the actual furniture sample. This is the point to assess whether it stays in position and whether the seat and back work comfortably together.
Specify the filling with the cover

The filling, liner, cover and underside form one construction. Record the proposed cushion thickness, the intended feel and how it is supported by the frame.
A thicker pad changes the occupied seat height and can affect how a chair fits its table. Check that relationship on a complete sample, with the specified upholstery in place.
Our quick-dry foam buying guide sets out the questions to raise about filling and moisture handling. Ask about the finished cushion rather than relying on the foam name alone.
Choose the fabric for the intended exposure
Request the exact fabric supplier, colour reference and technical information for the proposed application. Keep a physical swatch with the approved specification.
Water performance varies between products. Sunbrella’s guidance, for example, describes fabrics ranging from water-resistant to waterproof. That does not establish the water performance of every finished cushion made with those fabrics.
Describe an uncovered area clearly
State whether cushions remain outside during rain, whether staff can move them and how quickly seating must return to service. Include seams, zips, inner layers and drainage in the sample discussion.

Agree cleaning and storage before ordering
Request care instructions for the complete cushion, including whether its casing may be removed. A visible zip does not automatically mean that the cover can be machine washed.
Check the dimensions of the drying and storage area against the actual cushions. Follow the supplier’s instructions and avoid packing items away while they remain damp.
Our guide to cleaning cushions without removable covers covers the handling questions to discuss when the cover stays in place.
Keep an approved sample and specification
Record the furniture reference, finished dimensions, filling, fabric, fastening details and approval date. Photograph the complete setting and list any changes still outstanding.
Where spares or later replacements are important, ask what can be ordered separately and have that availability recorded. Keep the specification with the furniture order so future enquiries have a clear reference.
Prepare your outdoor furniture enquiry
When specifying custom outdoor cushions as part of a furniture project, review the proposed outdoor sofas or sun loungers at the same time.
Send Vectraout your furniture drawings or reference images, quantities and delivery destination. Include the preferred fabric direction, cushion dimensions and whether the area is sheltered or exposed. These details provide a practical starting point for the quotation and sample discussion.
